The goal of this meeting is to improve the standard of care for individuals with ADHD across Virginia. Raising the Bar is an annual event hosted by the Alvin V. Baird Attention and Learning Disabilities Center at James Madison University and the Region 5 Training and Technical Assistance Center. Each year researchers, physicians, educators, clinicians, and students come together with the common goal of sharing information and knowledge to further the understanding of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This year’s meeting will be held April 5th, 2005 at James Madison University’s College Center in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The meeting will begin at 8:30 am and end at 4:00 pm. Continuing Education Credits will be awarded. The cost of registration is $35.00. Lunch is provided and included in this cost of registration. A special reduced fee of $20, which does not include lunch, is available for students.
Dr. Arthur Anastopoulos currently a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro,serves as Director of Clinical Training and also directs an ADHD Specialty Clinic for children, adolescents, and adults. He has authored more than 40 articles and book chapters on the topic of ADHD and is also the author of a recently published text, entitled Assessing Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. His presentation, titled Evidence-based treatment of ADHD…what about evidenced-based assessment?, will initially discuss the rationale for using evidence-based treatments and then review which interventions are effective. Against this background, his presentation will also call attention to the fact that successful treatment of ADHD is also a function of the accuracy of the assessments that have been performed, both prior to and throughout the course of treatment.
Dr. Anastopoulos, Dr. Lopez-Williams, Dr. Bagwell and Dr. Minskoff, each of whom will present throughout the day, will also comprise a panel for an afternoon discussion. Members of the audience will be invited to submit questions to the panel. The panel will focus their discussion on services for children and adolescents with ADHD.
Dr. Andy Lopez-Williams: After receiving his doctoral degree, Dr. Lopez-Williams completed clinical residency at the University of Washington, where he treated families of adolescent offenders involved in the juvenile justice system. Dr. Lopez-Williams is currently an Assistant Professor in Clinical Child Psychology at West Virginia University. His research interests include disruptive behavior disorders and antisocial behavior from childhood to adolescence and the development of effective treatments. His presentation will focus on the Juvenile Justice System as it relates to adolescents with ADHD.
Dr. Catherine Bagwell: Dr. Catherine Bagwell is Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Richmond. Dr. Bagwell’s research focuses on peer relations and friendships in childhood and adolescence, especially among children with behavior problems like aggression and ADHD. Her presentation will focus on identifying some of the specific difficulties children with ADHD often have with friends and discussing strategies to help them be more successful in their relationships.
Dr. Esther Minskoff: Dr. Esther Minskoff, Ph.D. is Professor Emerita at James Madison University where she taught graduate and undergraduate courses in special education. Dr. Minskoff is co-author of Academic Success Strategies for Adolescents with Learning Disabilities and ADHD. Her presentation will examine the strategies that students with ADHD must be taught if they are to meet the rigorous demands of high stakes testing and course requirements at the middle, secondary, and postsecondary levels.
Poster Session We invite you to add your knowledge and experience to the meeting by submitting a poster. Posters visually display information that help participants to further their knowledge and discuss the work with authors. The poster session will provide the opportunity for discussion between conference participants and poster authors. Posters reflecting clinical services or research regarding children, adolescents, and adults with ADHD are welcome. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top poster presentations and the registration costs of the first author for each accepted poster will be waived. To submit a poster, please provide a brief summary (≤120 words) of the work to be presented, a cover page with the title of the work, names and contact information for all authors.
