The goal of this meeting is to improve the standard of care for individuals with ADHD across Virginia. Raising the Bar is an annual event hosted by the Alvin V. Baird Attention and Learning Disabilities Center at James Madison University and the Region 5 Training and Technical Assistance Center. Each year researchers, physicians, educators, clinicians, and students come together with the common goal of sharing information and knowledge to further the understanding of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This year’s meeting will be held at James Madison University’s College Center in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The meeting will begin at 8:30 am and end at 4:00 pm. Continuing Education Credits will be awarded. Lunch will be provided, and is included in the cost of registration.
We invite you to contribute your knowledge and experience to the meeting by submitting a poster. Posters reflecting clinical services or research regarding children, adolescents, and adults with ADHD are welcome. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top poster presentations and the registration costs of the first author for each accepted poster will be waived. To submit a poster, please provide a brief summary (≤120 words) of the work to be presented, a cover page with the title of the work, names and contact information for all authors.

This presentation will describe an innovative psychosocial and educational intervention that involves both the family and school. The intervention is based upon a conjoint behavioral consultation model, which is grounded in systems and cognitive-behavioral approaches to care. The presentation will describe: (a) the importance of improving family-school collaboration for children with ADHD, (b) prior research on psychosocial and educational interventions for children with ADHD, (c) components of the intervention program, (d) methods for evaluating outcomes, (e) preliminary findings regarding the effectiveness of the intervention, and (f) a clinical trial of this intervention program. About Dr. Power Dr. Power serves as the director for the Center for Management of ADHD at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the editor for the journal School Psychology Review. The hospital is the region's largest and most comprehensive center for diagnosing and treating attention and learning problems. The Center for Management of ADHD uses a unique multi-disciplinary approach, bringing together professionals and resources from developmental pediatrics, neurology, psychiatry and psychology.

Both of the presenters work on the research teams that are developing and evaluating the Challenging Horizons Program. They will present information on academic interventions that are appropriate for children in grades K-12. Handouts will be provided that include all of the necessary information to implement the interventions in schools or mental health settings. They will also provide information about how students with ADHD respond to these techniques.

Dr. Evans is the director of the Alvin V. Baird Attention and Learning Disabilities Center and professor of psychology at James Madison University. Dr. Reed is the director of the new Attention & Behavior Disorders Clinic at the center. They will present information about the latest family intervention techniques that have been found to be effective for children and adolescents with ADHD. Participants will be provided with resources about each of the techniques presented.

Dr. Frank Gearing is a practicing physician who specializes in the treatment of children with ADHD and has collaborated with investigators at the center on the development of new treatments for the disorder. Dr. Serpell is the associate director of the center and assistant professor of psychology at James Madison University. They will present the latest information about medications used to treat individuals with ADHD and discuss the coordination of medication treatment.
