Center for Learning Strategies

Timothy Schulte, Ph.D., Director

Mission Statement:

The Center for Learning Strategies at James Madison University seeks to empower individuals to meet their education and vocational goals. The CLS partners with the JMU community to help individuals clearly identify learning concerns and develop strength based on interventions that promote satisfying and meaningful learning and education development across the lifespan.

Goals for the Center for Learning Strategies:

  1. Provide individualized and person centered assessment of individual learning and educational needs.
  2. Design strength based and individualized intervention plans to support optimal learning and educational development.
  3. Support student education and training, interprofessional collaboration, and research through partnerships within James Madison University and the community.

Collaborative programs:

Work directly with Office of Disability Services to best determine individual learning needs and the best ways to address those needs within the JMU community.

Developing collaborative efforts with Special Education, Neuropsychology, Nursing, and Speech and Language to address the broad range of student needs across areas that can impact student learning.

In line with those collaborations we are also assisting students in locating services in the JMU community such as counseling, tutoring, math and writing labs, and advising.

Process:

A student may be referred to the Center for Learning Strategies by JMU faculty or staff to the Office of Disability Services or can be self-referred. Office of Disability Services will schedule an initial appointment to discuss the students concerns and ask questions to help identify problem areas

Office of Disability Services then passes that information to a multi-disciplinary team to determine if an evaluation is the considered necessary. The student is then given information on services and providers that are available to assist them. Students who then choose the CLS as their provider are then placed on a waiting list for a comprehensive evaluation.
