Frequently Asked Questions
-
Is the $100 for the cost of an evaluation included in the price for the STP?
The $100 evaluation fee covers the costs of identifying whether or not your child has ADHD. If the results of the evaluation indicate that your child indeed has ADHD, you are welcome to register him/her for the STP. Tuition for STP is $1700.
-
If my child is not diagnosed with ADHD can he/she still attend camp?
If your child is not diagnosed with ADHD we would encourage you to register him/her for JumpStart, where a diagnosis of ADHD diagnosis is not required for enrollment.
-
Who will be working with my child during these programs?
Both camps will be staffed with highly trained graduate and undergraduate students who will help your child to engage in a fun learning environment.
-
What is the ratio of staff to campers?
We ensure that there is a counselor for every three campers that attend each camp. Such a low ratio of staff to campers allows for extensive, closely-supervised social exchange amongst campers, whether it be one-on-one or in groups. Staff also address the individual needs of campers as they arise.
-
How are the STP and JumpStart different?
In addition to the STP lasting 6 weeks and JumpStart only lasting 1 week, the main difference is the treatment. The STP is a fun recreational setting, but the interventions are provided consistently over the 6 week period and tailored to the needs of each child. As the name implies, the Summer Treatment Program is a treatment program and each child has a treatment plan, we measure progress and make adjustments to interventions according to each adolescent’s response. JumpStart includes some of the same interventions; however, it is designed as an education and recreation program. Children and adolescents in both programs report that they have a wonderful time and we strive to keep each day an enjoyable and rewarding experience for your child.
-
Is financial assistance available?
While the ALDC is not able to underwrite the cost of tuition, resources are available to subsidize the cost of the camp. In particular, CHADD has a scholarship program for children and adolescents with ADHD to help them obtain successful summer camp experiences. Because our summer youth programs are identified by CHADD as eligible camps for children with ADHD, campers in our programs may apply for tuition assistance through CHADD. For further information, please consult the CHADD website.
-
What specific areas do your summer programs target?
Both program target social and academic skills. These skills are taught through activities designed to be both engaging and instructive. Staff reinforce and model effective strategies for social interaction on a daily basis. Art projects and team sports also provide invaluable opportunities to practice social skills while also building basic athletic competence and creating an environment for personal expression.
