Summer Treatment Program

The Summer Treatment Program (STP) is a six week day camp, operating from 8:30 to 5:00 Monday through Friday for rising 6th graders to rising 10th graders with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The STP uses interventions designed to target impairment associated with ADHD, while providing enjoyable activities for the youth that help them experience success. Recognizing that youth with ADHD have unique needs, trained counselors use specialized intervention techniques to help youth maximize their success in social and academic arenas. Campers will develop basic athletic skills and learn the benefits of regular physical activity. Sports activities also teach campers how to work and play in group settings and practice non-violent conflict resolution strategies. Prevention groups educate campers about the dangers of tobacco and substance abuse while teaching them strategies to engage in healthier alternatives for social interaction and stress management. Parents attend weekly evening meetings to learn more about ADHD and how to better manage home situations. Families leave STP with the skills needed to lead happier, healthier lives.

STP includes a set of empirically supported treatment procedures developed by William Pelham, Ph.D. in the 1980s and has since become a nationally recognized model for treating children and adolescents with ADHD (Pelham, Fabiano, Gnagy, Greiner & Hoza, 2005). The program has been provided in large cities across the country and in Japan and was part of the psychosocial treatment provided in the largest treatment outcome study ever funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (The MTA Cooperative Group, 2004; Wells et al., 2000). In addition, the program has been named a Model Program in Child and Family Mental Health by the American Psychological Association.
