Primary Counselors (4 credits)
Counselors are divided into two teams coordinated by a team leader and consisting of graduate and undergraduate students. The family of each middle school student in the program is assigned a family counselor (graduate student) who provides individualized services ranging from weekly phone contact to family and individual therapy. Each middle school student is assigned a primary counselor who establishes the primary relationship and coordinates interventions in the program.
Counselor Responsibilities:
- Develop a counseling relationship with assigned children
- Consult with teachers
- Work with the students' families and family therapist
- Develop treatment plans and write treatment summaries
Learn clinical treatment and assessment procedures through:
- Use of a manual
- Regular supervision sessions and treatment team meetings
- Modeling
- Outside readings and instruction
Requirements:
- Junior or senior status (sophomores with permission)
- Two references
- Some experience with children or adolescents preferred
