Karen Swette-Husain is the center’s ADHD Skills Coach for the High School Project.
As a lifetime educator, she has spent the majority of her career instructing students struggling with learning and attention disabilities.
Karen graduated in 1984 from Valdosta State University, Valdosta Georgia. With a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts, She worked 13 years as a high School teacher in a low-income, urban setting, where she designed and implemented curriculum specifically for students with ADHD characteristics. Her primary focus was creating a non-threatening, results inductive classroom environment, with approximately 10% of her students performing at or above college level.
Since moving to Virginia, she has continued her involvement in education, working for the Rockingham County School Systems Emotionally Disturbed Special Education Program. As teacher and mentor, her commitment is to build strong working relationships with faculty, parents, and students.
With a diverse knowledge of the education process, and motivated as an empathetic role model, her concentration is now focused on helping empower high risk students through the techniques and strategies provided by the Alvin V. Baird Attention and Learning
Disabilities Center.
